Byron Bay’s climate is fair all year round, with mild winters and balmy summers.
Summer is warm to hot with average maximum temperatures of around 27 degrees celsius. Winter is pleasantly cool with average maximum temperatures of around 20 degrees celsius. Historically March is the wettest month of the year and September the driest.
THE BEACHES
MAIN BEACH
Main Beach is directly opposite Beach Hotel. It is patrolled from October to Easter each year and is the home of Byron Bay Surf Club.
TALLOW BEACH
Tallow Beach is beautiful 7km surf beach that stretches from the lighthouse to Broken Head.
COSY CORNER BEACH
Cosy Corner is the northern end of Tallow Beach, named because it offers a sheltered spot when the northerly winds are blowing. Popular with local surfers and hang gliders.
LITTLE WATEGOS BEACH
Little Wategos is a quiet and secluded beach, reached by a long walking track. The beach faces north and offers a sheltered and protected spot for sunbaking and swimming.
WATEGOS BEACH
Wategos is one of Byron’s most scenic surf beaches. This picturesque beach, overlooked by the lighthouse, is in one of Byron Bay’s most exclusive suburbs.
THE PASS
The Pass is ranked in the top 15 of best surf beaches in Australia. The Pass is the launching point for the daily snorkelling and dive tour boats and whale watching boats in season.
CLARKS BEACH
Clarks Beach is perfect for swimming all year round, located in the bay of Byron. This north facing beach is popular with families as well as learn to surf activities.
BELONGIL BEACH
Belongil beach is located north of the town centre, and is a recreational dog friendly beach. The northern end is ‘clothing optional’.
THE SURROUNDING TOWNS:
ALSTONVILLE
Alstonville is an easy drive inland from Ballina, the village is surrounded by macadamia plantations and lush green hills.
BALLINA
Ballina, set on the Richmond River and Pacific Ocean, is a coastal town 25km south of Byron Bay. Famous for its fishing and seafood, it offers an array of activities for the water lover. Ballina airport, the closest commercial airport to Byron Bay, has daily direct flights from Sydney and three weekly flights direct from Melbourne.
BANGALOW
Bangalow is a scenic 10 minute drive from Byron Bay in the lush hinterland. Its picturesque main street offers stylish shopping, art galleries and cafes.
BRUNSWICK HEADS
Brunswick Heads is a charming seaside village. It offers many fishing spots, a great historic pub and several family friendly festivals throughout the year.
LENNOX HEAD
Lennox Head is home to the beautiful Seven Mile Beach and Lake Ainsworth and is famous for the amazing surf break at Lennox Point. Point Morton Lookout on Lennox Headland is a great spot to view the surfers at the point and whales can be easily seen in season.
LISMORE
Lismore is the regional capital of the Northern Rivers and a 45 minute drive from Byron Bay. Known as the ‘Rainbow Region’, Lismore is the gateway to several World Heritage National Parks and many hinterland towns and villages.
NIMBIN
Nimbin is an authentic alternative village in the scenic Nimbin Valley. Known as the hippie capital of Australia, Nimbin is bursting with art, culture and life. It is also on the way to several surrounding World Heritage National Parks.
MULLUMBIMBY
Set against the backdrop of Mt Chincogan, Mullumbimby is a 20 minute drive north of Byron Bay and a short drive from Crystal Castle, a worthwhile visitor attraction.
THE CHANNON
The village of The Channon is an hour’s drive west of Byron Bay. It holds a celebrated monthly market on the second Sunday of each month. The town is close to Protestors Falls in Nightcap National Park.
